Peter Bellamy  -  why I am an active supporter of Greg

I became acquainted with Greg in the middle of 2005 when I responded to an invitation to write to him from an organisation I had joined. Although I am a retired teacher, I was also a student of the Open University  here in the United Kingdom. What struck me about Greg's letters to me was the absence of any demands for help, only gratitude that I was prepared to give him some time - to read his letters and to respond in a thoughtful way. He waited for me to ask questions about his case, he didn't force information on me, and he didn't make me feel under any obligation to do more. However, as we both became confident about writing I started to learn more about this man and to appreciate qualities that were completely unexpected. I wanted to know and understand more about his case. What I learned disturbed me greatly. I didn't just take Greg's word about the process of his Trial and the subsequent Appeals - I read for myself  the transcripts of the legal papers and also contacted his attorney. I also read more about the misgivings, even among present and former members of the U.S. Supreme Court, of the legal process in America concerning Capital Punishment cases, and about the many instances coming to light of INNOCENCE - proven by determined lawyers and the recent scientific advances in DNA and fingerprint evidence. I came to the conclusion, that like so many others, the due process of law had dealt Greg an incredible injustice, and that there was every chance that he too was INNOCENT. Bente Hjortshoj was a supporter long before myself, and we exchanged information, experiences and views about Greg's case. We began to work together to strengthen Greg's presence on the Internet, and to try to inform the world about his plight. Others have since joined us in this effort, and we and Greg are very grateful for that. Much remains to be done, and there is a long way to go to achieve the retrial and justice that is Greg's right under the U.S. Constitution. We pray that with your help we will be successful in our mission.
